Block-Off Kit for MHI TD04HL Turbo Volvo

Post by Joe_Hun »

Does anybody put a block off kit on the Compressor Bypass Valve and use blow off valve instead? what will be the cons and pros if i do this on my car?

I've seen and heard of it. I was even looking at a car for sale on Kijiji that had that, among other 'mods' done to it. There's vids on youtube of it too.
I think there are issues to address if it's done though, because the ECU/system is expecting to have that "blown off" air introduced back into the system (or something). Don't quote me on that explanation though -

Not really familiar enough but I am very skeptical of the prudence of such things.

Think about it this way: If its cheaper and simpler to take this part off, wouldn't the manufacturer have already done this to get the most performance out of their engine, especially if its more complex and expensive to have it in place ?

So, this system is there for a reason. Yes, you can probably get increased boost but, without all the anciallry supporting systems, will it help and not hurt?

I don't know the answer to that but it is always the way I think about things.

As a design engineer, someone went to great effort to design that bypass system which cost more than they wanted to spend on the engine, so it must have a real value in being there, no?

The CBV does nothing to increase /decrease boost pressure unless it has failed.
The CBV handles the shock wave created when you are under boost and suddenly come off the throttle. The boost bounces off the throttle plate and whips back at the turbo vanes. It can break them so a CBV is installed to remedy this.

The computer is not aware of any air escaping through a blow off valve so it calculates fuel needed on all air that passes by the MAF. If you remove the CBV and put in a blow off valve you will be losing air from the system. Therefore the motor will stumble slightly and have to recover from the unneeded/wasted fuel that has been injected based on the air that passed the MAF .

Setting the blow off valve at a higher pressure will not improve boost. It will increase the damage and stress done to your turbo.

In short
Makes the car run bad when off throttle after boost
Wastes fuel
Makes that noise that makes unschooled mechanics think you are fast and furious. (Reality would be over fueled and under efficient).
Its also a real pain to get to.

Yes!!! If you want a sound put a short ram on it and get the darth vader sound! you can hear the blow off and you don't have to spend a lot! The external blow off will cause issues with running! I mean it can be done and work ok but you will waste fuel!
