Volvo S40 t5 power steering

We have a spare car a Volvo S40 T5 and the power steering electric booster pump runs all the time. I disconected it and the car feels the same aparently its the sensor that pressurises the booster question is , is it safe to just disconnect the electric pump as I am sure it will burn out if it runs all the time
