Thank you all for helping out with my problems.After changing spark plugs, coil and overhauled the distributor cap and changed the thermostat none seemed to have resolved the problem.So i changed the fuel fillter which seems to have solved the problem fingers crossed all as been well for the last week,so thank you all.

If the problem returns it could be a bad engine coolant temperature sensor. In that case, change it and the thermostat. Volvo sensor is expensive, but worth it. The wires pull out of the aftermarket sensors after a short time.
