Help, Advice and DIY Tutorials on Volvo's P80 platform cars -- Volvo's 1990s "bread and butter" cars -- powered by the ubiquitous and durable Volvo inline 5-cylinder engine.
I recently purchased a 93 850 GLT with 126,000 miles. Shortly after purchase, the vehicle would occasionally display the following problem, which would subsequently activate the flashing fault arrow:
Morning start, warm climate. Put transmission in reverse. Went into gear fine, but then it shifted itself back into neutral, then into reverse, then neutral, then reverse, etc. (Lever not moving, of course). Slight increase in RPM's, and it stays in gear properly. Occasional same behavior when at idle speed in Drive, until RPM's increased slightly.
Planning to change transmission fluid, and hope this helps. Is this a common problem? Computer or component related? HELP!

The flashing arrow is a PCM error code with the transmission. Something in the trans gave an error code. This may be an intermittant problem or an indication of a costly repair.
I recomend that the trans fluid be flushed and that the error code be pulled from the computer. With the error code you will know what component "crapped" and sent the error code. By flushing you "may" flush the problem out.
Good luck,
