Quote from article: "Mr. Prokop obtained an operating permit for his stove-car from the Swiss Technical Inspection Authority, making it perfectly legal to operate."

Didn't know the Swiss were all related!!

It all makes sense when you find out how hard it is to change the heater core/blower motor on one of those. Or, for that matter, a Saab 900.

He certainly shops at Wal-Mart.

Of course this is not so outlandish as odd solutions go. Volvo was a leader in onboard methane distillery powered cars during WWII. They had a platform or trailer behind with a still you loaded with barnyard and food waste to produce gas. I guess this may have lead to the phrase, "It takes a lot of shit to keep a Volvo running".

That's a nice one!

To expand the application of this method of converting chemical energy into heat, I can recall reading about trucks they used to build utilizing a gas-generator (which was a stove, quite a bit bigger in size than the one shown above) that burned wood; the chimney pipe went to a huge particulant filter, and then the exhaust gases (primarily unburned HCOs and CO with lots of soot and goo) were sent to the intake of a four-stroke engine - which of course didn't last too long

That was sometime between WW1 and WW2, but with current gas price trends... who knows? 8)

Had to add the image in case the link went dead. This one will go down in time....

Imagine the thought of being flung into this hot hard thing in the case of an accident.....and the damage it would do to your body if the car were crushed. And where would that smokestack end up in the event of a rollover?

Sometimes logic just has to yield for practicality.... :)

Man, those flame colors are awesome!
How does he control the Air-to-Fuel ratio so precisely?
