I bought my first Volvo, a '91 240 SE Wagon, at the end of December. He's extremely clean; however, as with any 20+ year old car, needs a little love. Though I'm new to DIY car repair in general, I'm excited to do any work I can, because I actually care about this car (and need to save a little coin.)
First thing I did was take The Colonel (he's gold) to a reputable Volvo shop. Among a few other things, they said the driver's side torque rod bushings in the rear suspension were worn and advised replacement of all 4. I bought the poly bushings from ipd and am ready to do the job but could use some advice from any who have done this work.
1. It's unclear to me where to place the jack stands; do I put them under the axels to take load off the suspension, or next to the jack points on the frame/body?
2. Any advice on how to break those nuts free? I tried while I had it in the air durring brake hose replacement, but couldn't make them budge.
3. Any way to remove the old bushings without a machine press? I had the idea of inserting a hacksaw blade through the center sleeve and cutting them out. Has anyone tried this?
4. Anything else I should be thinking about?
Any experience with this type of work that you can share will be greatly appreciated; as I said I don't have much myself but am very willing to learn as I go. I'll post how the job went once I have it done in hopes that my trial and error can save someone else time and effort.
