Did my first Volvo timing belt. This is the Manuel tensioner.
After I set the timing belt and set the lever in the middle of the window", and turning the
ENgine over. Is the tensioner suppose to bring back and forth left to right ??
Or should it defiantly stay stationary ?
I want to make sure before I start it thanks !
98 v70t timing tensionor suppose to move ?

You have to perform one more step.
Move the crank forward (clockwise) until you feel that the t belt is tight between the intake cam and the crank. Then reset the tension.
By doing this you are giving the belt equal tension as the tensioner works on the exhaust side. If it is set slacked (with cam marks and crank marks set) then it is running loose on the intake side.
Follow the procedure above. You will feel the difference and it will be shown in the tensioner window.
Once set with the intake side tensioned you will not see the tensioner indicator move in its set range window .
This step is often overlooked.

When you start up the motor after setting the tension correctly, the indicator will stay in the range . Turning it by hand you will see small movements.

ok i cant get the car to start. im 99 percent positve i got the timing belt on correctly. engine turns over good just wont fire up.
I failed to mention earlier just to keep things simple. I did a whole new cylinder head install on this car. The old head ran ok on four cylinders before i took it all apart.iit had a burnt out exhaust valve in cylinder 5.
So all backed together correctly i believe but it wont fire up. It feels like the ignition timing is to far advanced. I've built eleven secong turbo dsm's ( mitsubishis ) but this is my first volvo.
Is the base ignition timing adjustable? Can anyone think of a reason why it doesnt want to fire up? It seems to want to stop turning over like the igntion is off. Im only say 75 percent sure i got the plug wires back on correctly. I took this car apart months ago. Does anyone have a diagram picture of how the 5 wires exactly go back on which cap spot?? I been looking for this for days and cant find it anywhere online.
thanks thanks again

Ignition timing is not adjustable, the ECU takes care of it. Cam timing is adjustable.
I was going to say wires first, then check the cam position sensor and the crank sensor connections.
Plug wires (Haynes manual is wrong about the order FYI):
