2000 Volvo S80 2.9L non-turbo
I Need advice and help quick. My car was parked, went out to start it and no start! I had just drove it 15 minutes priorCar sounded like it wasnt getting compression. Investigated timing belt and it was a little loose. The timing belt tenioer bearings had fell out but tensioner was somewhat in place. Took harmonic balancer off and idler pulley. Got a new tensioner to install. Took off accessory belt and old timing belt. Already lined up exhaust and intake cam sprockets before I took belts off. Found 2 tiny marks on crankshaft timing pulley. Problem! Their is a two inch space with a slanted line on left and shorter straight line on right. Where do I center the timing mark for the crankshaft timing srprocket? It's not like the T6 pdf. I've seen on this site.

The mark can be hard to see. There is a plug just behind the starter motor that you can drop a 3/8" ratchet extension into. Turn the motor counter clockwise by hand, gently until it stops. Once it does this, the crank is in the correct position which is NOT TDC so don't go by that

Thanks for the reply boosted5cyl. I was low on time and did some more research Thursday night and found the mark on "75 Ohms"article on " Volvo Forum". According to his photos the groove between the two tiny hash marks on the crank pulley line up with the left edge of the slanted line on the left. whats confusing to me is there is a raised line on the crank pulley but it is in a different location than the two little hash marks. The big question is which one do you line up with the mark on the block?
I will send you the link so you can see it and let me know what you think. http://m.volvoforums.com/forum/showthre ... 853&page=2 Related Issue: When I got the car a few weeks ago I noticed oil leaking a little down from top of engine. after trying to start car with no results. Checked plugs and 1 & 2 were good. 3,4,5,6 were covered with oil! I'd never seen that in a car before! Cleaned oil out and pulled plugs. Cleaned them with MAF cleaner. Stuck scewdriver in each spark plug hole and no oil was on screwdriver. Put plugs back in and no change in how engine sounded. I know I have to change the seals. Starting to think the valves are bent or something.

Before making a negative assumption, please do a compression test (with the timing set correctly). You might as well get lucky
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Ive been working on my car all week so Im not feeling so lucky right now.
If I can get some answers to the questions on my last 2 posts I can get on it tomorrow and at least know ifwhat I did was right. The S80 is my only ride right now so I really need to get it rolling. I teach weapons safety in the Air Force.
