Need extra keys made for '99 V70 wagon

Post by oldcarfools »

This is our first Volvo and we have been quite surprised at the short list of resources to obtain parts for our car. I am needing to obtain one or more extra ignition keys and have found that this blank is not stock in my local hardwares. Are Volvo keys strictly dealer items? Thanks to all of you who post advice on this forum, you've been immensely helpful to us as we have had to do WAY TOO MUCH repairs on this car since purchasing it.

The 99's have a chip embedded in the keys, and will need to be programmed for your car by a dealership.

Bad news...it's expensive. They charged $200 to have A new key and remote for my sister's Ford...not sure what a Volvo dealer will charge you.

I have a 1998 S70 T5

Jblackburn, what is the difference between a Key with a Chip and a Key Fob (Remote)? Do they both need programing? The local locksmith in Berkeley CA wanted to charge $25.00 for one key. They use what is called a laser cutter which is just a more precision machine capable of cutting both sides. Called another locksmith in Concord CA and they wanted $35.00 but it turns out the locksmith is related to the Berkeley locksmith so he was willing to match the price. Went there and after cutting one key I asked if he was willing to cut 2 for $40.00. He laugh a little but said why not as the blanks have been sitting around for awhile.

Call a few local locksmiths as some do programming if needed (I am not sure)? The first locksmith I called wanted $160.00!!!!!!!!!!!

Blessings,

BKM

Oldcarfools my Volvo is eating a hole in my wallet even though I am just buying parts. Purchased my first Volvo also in Jan 2012 so welcome to the club. Love the car though and actually easy to fix after the 1st or 2nd try ;(

On a 1998, a key can be cut anywhere that can laser cut keys - there's no chip embedded in the key.

Remotes need to be programmed by a dealer, though.

jblackburn,

Does the key look any different and do the dealer program the chip in the key also? Thanks.

There's no chip to be programmed in a 1998 key. It's just a key.

The 99 key is a lot fatter to make room for the chip inside (which actually looks kinda like an SD card). Looks like this.

Maybe but considering that I have lost the last key, this is the best I could do. Otherwise, I would have saved 150$ by ordering from another dealer which offer a rebate for Volvo club members (we have a club for Quebec Volvo owners).

Correction, I have a '98 and it doesn't appear to have a chip embedded. Sorry for the mis-type!
