Volvo V70 XC wont start, no compression cylinder 1,3,5.

The worse thing about this is it's not your car. I hope they are paying you something for ALL THIS WORK and won't blame you for it not going well. :?

Alright, no offense the the wonderful people here on this forum but i hate volvo with the passion of a thousand burning suns. Did you know that they have 2 different thicknesses of valves for each vehicle for each year. Identical in all aspects with regards to the actual valve diameter and length, however the diameter of the section that goes through the valve guide switches between 6 and 7 mm and no its not with regards to it being turbo or not, its based off the vin and its for most of there models that they do that. I am currently trying to find a volvo that i can pull the 7 mm valves from because the ones i got today were the 6 mm.

Alright update, it turns out that the 850's have the 7 mm valve stem diameter so i pulled the valves from a 96 850 and they matched the 99 v70xc perfectly. I have the engine mostly back together, i am going to make myself a camshaft lock tool so that way i KNOW the camshafts are in the correct position. I will post more updates soon.

Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.

Alright all done. This car was my arch nemesis until the end. So i locked the camshafts to do the timing and was unable to get it right, i preloaded the VVT and all that stuff. I tried getting it twice, and i would spin it by hand to make sure it was good and it kept hitting something so i finally told my friend to just have the shop set the timing. They did that but right after a spark plug cracked, as in the ceramic parts cracked causing cylinder 2 to misfire. I replaced the spark plug, than she did not want to start, but thank God she did eventually. Now there were allot of vibration at this point with the car but i was done, you fix one thing with this car and another breaks. So she took it to the shop and it turned out to be the idler for the serpentine belt was bad, and than one of the coil packs went bad. Needless to say i believe the car is possessed (not really but pretty darn close).

I would recap everything at this point but there is just too much and it is all in the topic. Again thanks for the help everyone it was invaluable.

Why are so many threads ending in dead end, no solutions, just the problems? I have gone through dozens of forums with no compression issues in all 5 cylinders and no one has solution to post. What other than timing and bad valves or cracked head can cause this issue.

0 compression on all 5 is a botched valve job. Lots of ways to screw it up but they head comes off for all of them

Freebie; The OP stated in the thread that ALL the valves got bent. That would be due to improper timing upon install, that's why he was stressed over stem diameters of the Solid vs. Hyd lifter cars. Also, in the first few posts he only mentions changing the head gasket and bolts. I am not sure the head wasn't warped. Then when it warmed up, it stretched the new head bolts?!
Lastly, he says he got the car buttoned up and the shop completed the timing of the VVT hub. It was a tough read, but the info is there.

The other scenario is no compression but lawnmower syndrome, sudden loss of compression due to fuel wash-down of the oil film on the cylinder walls, leaving your motor like a goldfish on the table!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

There isn’t much to add when someone has botched a job. You can’t get the expertise necessary to do this level work watch8ng YouTube videos. That’s a tough sell for some. Most every Volvo person past beginner mechanic knows the stem size changed inthe transition from mechanical to hydraulic lifters, nothingnew there.

Why are so many thread dead as to solutions, they are left hanging, and I have same problem with no solution on any forums, very discouraging.
