Why do TD04's crap out on SAABS?

Post by Marcobrick »

I've not come across a Volvo with a duff turbo yet, so why do 90% of the SAAB 9-5's I'm looking at adding to my fleet (traitor, I know but they are sooooooo cheap) have replacement turbos at under 100k miles? I hope they don't lunch AW50-42 trannys too...Sorry for posting this here but I just know there are some SAABophiles lurking here....
The Fleet:

The TD04-15T is only used on the 9-3 SE and 9-5 Aero models - same as the Volvo 850 T5; the regular 9-3 and 9-5's use a smaller Garrett turbo.

The 9-3 SE also has just AWFUL turbo lag - the regular 9-3 ain't too bad at all, but doesn't pull as strong in the top end.

If you see information on them replacing the TD04's quite often, I'm not sure, but I do know that the TD04 is a pretty common upgrade for people when they blow the Garrett turbos.

A learning experience is one of those things that says, "You know that thing you just did? Don't do that."
