Coolant Loss

Post by thiggy »

My 2001 Volvo V-70 XC, 2.4 engine looses coolant to the extent that about every 4 months the low coolant level light comes on. I usually have to add a couple of pints. I have never been able to ascertain where it goes. The system remains well pressurized, the car has never overheated, there is no sign of water in the oil or transmission fluid nor oil in the coolant. I can

I had the same issue with my '00 v70 xc. Did the pressure tests, tightened clamps on hoses, had hoses replaced etc.--dealt with it for about 9 months until one of the mechanics I took it to actually checked the reservoir and found it to have a leak. They replaced the reservoir and I have not had any further problems. Good Luck.

My coolant light is on! I checked the fluid and it is over the max. When I got some of the coolant out of it, it was an orange color on the top and green on the bottom. UGH!!!! What is wrong?

There is a green coolant and an orange one....not good to mix these. If I were you, I would flush your system and replace with Volvo coolant...a bit more expensive, but really not bad (about $20) to be on the safe side for your aluminum radiator and engine.

By the way, I was also loosing a bit of coolant...every few months until I found the clamp on the hose from the over-fill to the thermostat housing was the culprit. Just enough leaking out to evaporate with the hot engine area. Instead of changing the clamp, I just replaced the hose with silicone hose and zip-ties and all is good now.
