'01 v70xc valet key works, master keys don't

The master key for my 2001 v70xc works in the door, glove compartment but not in the ignition (doesn't turn at all). The valet key works in the door AND ignition (turns without hesitation). Could this be a problem with the chip in key? If so, how can it be resolved?

I just bought this car, the master key has never worked.

Lock and unlock the car three times by using the door lock not the remote, that resets some parameters.
If that does not work see your Volvo dealer

No luck locking and unlocking (using key in door) 3 times. Can the dealer re-program the key or does it probably need to be replaced?

I really haven't a clue.
Technically there's no obvious reason why they shouldn't be working so as I said up top, you need to get raked over the coals by the dealer.
The key is obviously for your car so it should take a reprogramming, why it needs it though is a mystery
No other way out here, sorry

Chip fried, no?
Not so common but can happen due to EMP (lightning, microwave, radar or X-ray exposure).
