Well, to be more precise, it's not the wheel itself, but from that area. It's mostly prominently when turning left (so that the car's weight is shifted to the right hand side), but can also be heard when driving over bumps. It's not a hard crunching metal-on-metal sound, but like a gentler sound of when your break-pads are gone. Turning right (and weight on the left side) does not make this sound.
A mechanic (non-Volvo) has said I need to replace my inner steering rack ties, but a) ordering it through them costs 10 times more than what I can get them for myself (and so I'm after the right parts), and b) the ordering parts through them is 6-8 weeks. I'm also wondering if the tie rack (inner or outer) rods can make such a distinct sound on something that feels slightly more suspension-ish? (Also, I'm trying to find out what the different parts are; see picture : I've noticed that part D (outer?) is a bit loose, although I'm perplexed as to how it can make such a sound)
If nothing obvious comes out, I'll drive and record the sound later.
Thanks!

You sure it's not the brake dust cover scraping against the rotor?

Well, I'm not sure, but I don't see any obvious tear anywhere. I've jacked it up and had a good look on both sides, and nothing really jumps out. I've checked that the steering rack rods on the left hand side is also a bit loose, so I suppose this is normal, then?
Starting to sound like suspension issues now rather than the steering rack. I just had a hunch about it because the mechanic says it needs replacing (the inner tie rod), but also that my tie wear is unusually high, and my wheel tilts slightly (ever so slightly) towards the left, even after wheel alignment.
Any clues?

I had a similiar noise from front driver side wheel, when turning left. In my case the outside pad was worn and the rust ridge on outside edge of rotor was scraping on the inside of brake pad.
My first clue was the rust ridge on rotor was freshly ground and removing the brake pad confirmned it was rubbing.
New brake pads fixed that problem. Hope your problem is an easy fix.

Hi All,
Ok, got more info on my case. Yesterday I took the wheel off, and had a better look around. It seems that there is indeed scraping (see pics), but on the inside of the wheel rim. The offender is the bottom part of the brake fixture (causing aluminium against steel scraping), and I suspect that it happens because the suspension of the wheel is too low for some reason. One seal on the bearing joint for the wheel section is broken, and maybe this is significant?
Anyway, I've posted a few pics (which I hope you can see; let me know otherwise), and I would be very glad if anyone could make a comment or two about this, and if they've heard about this?

Check your wheel bearing.
Mine acted just like yours and it was a wheel bearing. Much less invasive than steering rack work and you can do it yourself without difficulty.

Can you make a live video recording while your driving so we can hear?shelterit wrote:Anyone? Pretty please? The reason I'm harping on this is that I live in an area with no Volvo experts, and have to travel quite a bit to get to one.
I was also thinking wheel bearing but from you description I figured it was brakes.
Usually the wheel/hub bearing will make like a thumping sound as you drive and the faster you go the faster the bearing will thump!!

From your pics I would suggest a complete overhaul of your front suspension/steering, CA bushings, tie rod ends, ball joints, hub bearing assembly, sway bar links, ect.. You should do or have both sides done or she won't ride properly and after you replace all the components you'll have to bring her to a shop that has alignment equipment. FCP Groton should have all the parts you need.

thanks for your info. I'm trying to get quotes on replacing the front suspension, but they're all impossible to get actual figures from.
Anyway, I'll get it in to a Volvo mechanic first and at least get a status reportl
Thanks!
Thanks!
