O.K. I started a new thread as my 1990 240 dl has changed problems on me. It started out as a stalling/running rough symtom. At that time, per advice here, I replaced both temperature sending units, removed and cleaned the TPS and the throttle body, plugs, cap, rotor, checked the plug wires ohms good and showed spark jump to ground, air filter, checked timing, timing belt dealer installed 30k ago, trap replaced, checked pressure thingy on fuel rail it doesn't smell of gas, listened to injectors and they are clicking, AMM and O2 sensor replaced with new parts 35k ago. The car did run, it just had low power and stalled sometimes. The plugs were very black and smelled of gas.

The car has sat for 3 months now and I have the energy to work on it again. Now it doesn't want to start. It fired up for 3 seconds when I went out to try it today. I pulled the plugs and the wires are still jumping with spark. But, and this is new, the first two plugs were very wet with gas and black. The last two plugs were a little smelly, but very clean, like brand new.

I tried a AMM from the junk yard, no diference so I took it back and got my money back. I have also bought two AMM that were used and supposedly good off of ebay, still no good. I tried disconnecting the wires to the AMM, no difference. The 25amp fuse is good, as are all the ones in the panel.

I'm stumped :?:

Because you are running rich I suspect your fuel pressure regulator is sticking and your fuel pressure is too high. Do you have the gage to check your fuel pressure? This happened on my sons car. It is mounted on the fuel rail and takes about 5 min to change. I think it was about $80 but I would check the pressure first. I think it normally runs about 23-27 lbs. If you suck on the hose coming off the fuel pressure regulator it should change the pressure. Suck, lower pressure. No suck higher pressure. This is fuel injections version of an acclerator pump. Which also explains why your car has less power. Maybe the hose has a hole in it. The car will stall when this happens and the pressure goes high. The hose runs from the vacuum canister on the fuel pressure regulator to the vacuum pipe a short distance away on the intake just toward the engine from the throttle body. Inspect with your eyeball.

I don't have a pressure guage. I got a regulater from one of the cars in the junk yard. This car still had the baby stroller in the back, but was crushed in on one side. It appears to have been driving when crashed so I'm assuming the regulater is good. No diference at all. It cranks, but no start. Any other ideas?

check for spark and gas. Did you see a spark? If you see spark then it is probably fuel related but you said your plugs are wet so I am thinking spark. Do the lights light up on the dash when you turn the key to on? A common problem on volvo is that the electrical part of the ignition switch goes bad. When it does you get no lights on the dash. The wire that brings voltage to the back of the speedo and then on to other places like the coil is a red/black wire on my 88 240. I do not know if yours is the same. You can get switch at www.fpcgroton.com or locally for more. If no fuel it could be fuel pump relay, bad intank pre pump or bad fuel pump. Relay is on passenger side peel back carpet and look up above passengers right foot. It is a big white relay. Flick it a few times with your finger and try to start again.

I get spark and fuel (I don't know the pressure) the plugs get wet. The spark jumps the gap when I put the plug near a ground source. The air filter is new. I don't have a tach. The lights and bells work when you turn the key. I checked the fuses in the panel near the driver door and the 25 fuse near the driver fender under the hood, all appear good. I'm so confused.

If anyone has a good guess let me know. I'm moving in 3 weeks and don't want to pay for a tow on this thing. What would the junk yard give me?

Check to see if the Aux airslide motors hoses are connected or detiererated. That will cause havoc for sure.
I am a current Volvo 850T5 owner. Have had '67 144ES, 71 142E, 76 245DL, 80 242GT, 81 245DL. Still wish that I had the 142E. :(

I scored an '06 Harley Dyna Superglide for Fathers day.

What is that? I'm willing to try anything to get this thing running.

The Aux airslide is located on or near the intake manifold. Pre 82 it is on the left hand side of the valve cover between the intake plenum and valve cover, it has an electrical connector facing the rear if I remember correctly. It will have two hoses coming in and out of it. Its about 4 inches long. If you can't find it, refer to your manual and it will show you.

This is a 1990 240dl. I don't see anything like that on mine. Thanks anyway for the idea. Any more ideas? Please

My 98 850T5 has an aux airslide motor, I think its also called an auxilary idle controler/motor. Its located near the intake manifold. Your car should have one too. If this is not connected it will cause the injectors to pump too much fuel into your engine and flood it. Check your maintanence manual for that part and you will see it is there.

Some times your car may backfire a bit and cause one of the tubes to pop off and cause a no start issue. Check it out.
