89' 780 bertone

Post by icthus »

I have an 89' Bertone with a few problems.
When the car first starts up after sitting for 30 min or so it runs fine. After it warms up is starts to lose power. More like the ignition shuts off then back on. Or like it's running out of gas. Once this happens it gets to the point of un-drivability.
Now I have changed the fuel filter, The Fuel injection relay(radio supressor relay) and the temp sending unit. I've tried testing the fuel pressure regulator but I don't have the proper tools. Dont have the cash flow to take it to a shop either. They'll just start replacing things till they figure it out anyway so why pay them when I can do it.

I'm at a loss here. no check engine light. I have to get this car running properly before I leave for Alabama for my job. Wife needs a decent car while I'm gone. Any ideas?

Whoa! A little hasty with the condemnation, I think.

Some of us work for a living, often long hours and we get to the forum when we can. I have been away for two days, have just returned and dropped in to see what is happening and I'm confronted by this tirade.

Do you still want help or have you burnt it?

Bill

Sorry. I haven't burned it yet. As far as long hours I've been working 70 hours a week so I know the feeling.
I do need help badly. I've asked this on several forums with nothing more than 25 reasons for it happening. I'd like to narrow it down a bit. Got any clues?

A little more info, please. Is this the 2.3 turbo or the 2.8 engine?
no check engine light
On the '89 780 you won't have a check engine light as they weren't fitted with the On-Board Diagnostic unit.

Usually when running out of fuel or having fuel starvation problems the engine will cough and splutter to a stop. With an ignition problem it usually just dies. Am I correct in thinking that yours does just die?

2.8 v6

Check the fuel pumps and relays. Rear pump seems to not be working but not totally sure on this. I'll pull the fuel line off the high pressure pump tomorrow and see if I get fluid.

replaced fuel filter
fir

cleaned mass air
needs fuel pressure reg since this one just started leaking.

Not sure what else. Oh and replaced temp sensor. Fron electric fan still isnt coming on...

This won't necessarily tell you if the in-tank pump is working as the main pump can pull fuel through without the priming action of the in-tank pump.

To check both pumps: The fuse/relay tray can be pulled out a little to ease inserting/removing relay. So pull it out as much as the wires will allow. Pull out the fuel injection/pump relay module, middle row left hand side. Take a small piece of wire to jumper terminals 30 and 87/2 on the relay board, the terminals are identified on the relay module pins. This should make the car act like the fuel pump relay is on. Be careful that you insert the jumper only in these terminals or you will damage the ECU. Now turn the ignition on without turning the engine. You should hear a whirring sound from where you are. That will be the main fuel pump. Now go to the fuel tank and remove the filler cap. Put your ear to the filler hole and you should hear a quieter whirring sound. That will be the in-tank pump. If you hear both noises, the fuel pumps are working.

I would replace the fuel pressure regulator before doing any of these checks as it may be the problem.
Front electric fan still isnt coming on...
Is this the radiator cooling fan? It is covered by fuse #13 and has a relay in the fuse/relay tray, front row left hand side. The relay also covers the power windows and is interchangeable with the headlight relay which is in the middle row next to the fuel relay. However, the fan should only kick in when the engine is really hot or when the AC is engaged.

No whirring sound... Typical for me. anyway I should be getting the fpr today. Then I'll go get the fuel pump after that.

Got the FPR. Installed and it's a no-go. Starts right up but after the warm up it starts it flutter. Maybe the in tank pump is not working causing the main pump to starve itself after so long.
