S80 2000 bogus messages

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

S80 2000 bogus messages

Post by pipo24 »

I have had bogus messages showing up on the message viewer for the last month. The ABS and STC messages have been on for a long time, since they stopped working, but the mechanic said that if the brakes were OK I didn't have to pay attention to those messages. Since about a month ago, the message "Stop ASAP break failure" started showing up occasionally as well as the engine light (emission malfunction or gas cap not on properly). The breaks work fine and the emission was checked a few months ago, so there is no reason to malfunction, the gas cap is on tight. I also had the message that the alarm system required service. In reading the forum I see that these messages do appear to other Volvo S80 owners. The alarm system was replaced a week ago, I have a new battery and a new alternator. The messages keep showing up. I cannot replace the ABS box right now. My question is: I am in Florida and have to drive back to Ottawa where I live. It is 2400 km or about 1700 miles. Will the car make it? What makes these messages appear? By the way, I have 235,000 km and until these messages started, the car always behaved perfectly. I did all the maintenance calls on time and any repair that was necessary.
I would really appreciate some answers!

Some posts have talked about many lights coming on in the dash. It was due to faulty ABS 'module' which had cold soldering joints fail. Search this forum and you should find some examples. From what I recall, most people pull the module and have it rebuilt. Can't comment on the reliability for your trip. There are instructions regarding removal of the module and the car can be driven without it. You just won't have the ABS on your brakes. There are quite a few places doing the rebuild which is much cheaper than a new module. Xemodex is one company. http://xemodex.com/technologyimproved/canada/volvo
