Both inner CV joint boots on the '02 S80 T6 have started to leak clean amber grease out between the large end of each boot where it attaches around the three-lobed body of the inner CV joint. While both boots do sport some superficial cracks, neither boot is actually torn and I assume that the wide angle that these freakishly short half shafts move through with normal suspension movement has been pulling on the boots causing the grease leak.
While there's no indication that either inner CV joint is worn or that the original grease that remains is contaminated--which usually would be the case with an open tear in a boot--with nearly 90k miles on the factory original parts, I'd think it wise to go ahead and pull the halfshafts, clean/regrease the inner CV joints and replace the old boots with new ones.
Oddly enough, the old copy of VADIS that has served me so well to maintain the S80 doesn't go into any useful detail with regards to servicing the inner CV joints.
What I'm curious to know is:
- How much grease is needed to service one inner CV joint--inside the body of the joint vs. inside the boot?
- What type of retaining clip is used to secure the tripod bearing to the end of the halfshaft?
- Is there anything besides the boot itself holding the inner CV joint together? IOW if the boot is removed, can the halfshaft with the tripod bearing still attached easily separate from the three-lobed body of the inner CV joint while that part is still installed in the transaxle?
