Good luck.
I don't see a happy ending to this. It's going to boil down to a "he said, he said".
CALL TODAY and if you know a cheap lawyer, (a friend perhaps) I would give him a call too.
You may get lucky but in my life experience most of these guys never admit to doing wrong (at least on the first go around)
He towed my car backwards.

Sucks dude...
Complete moron tow person. Either a newbie, drunk or just had a fight with his girlfriend/wife.
When approaching the tow company I wouldn't round up said moron to ask for his side of the story. I would ask to speak with the owner to discuss "an unfortunate matter" and if such a person is present just tell it the way it happened in a calm, courteous and matter of fact tone. Sometimes owners/managers of companies will say something to get you to react harshly so they are "justified" in telling you to go away. If you are pleasant then the tow operator might confess to his stupidity. If this doesn't happen then I believe you are going to have an uphill battle and small claims may be your only recourse which certainly won't guarantee a victory but the tow company will not be able to have counsel present and the judge may decide the winning party is the one that remains the most calm, courteous AND DOES NOT INTERRUPT THE OPPOSING PARTY'S TESTIMONY or ESPECIALLY THE JUDGE AT ANY TIME.
Now on to your part in this... Sometimes we are not on our game when tired, just having a fight with the wifey etc and we don't stop something that could have been avoided. Such is your case. Through years of experience and countless tows I have learned to watch everything a tow operator does while hooking up AND towing my vehicle including driving behind or with him to the PROPER destination. Perhaps this will avoid something much worse later in life.
Just the other night I did something that took me off my game and I forgot to not only NOT lock the doors to my shop but left the doors wide open. Granted I had locked the gate and fortunately I was not robbed of everything over night... we all make mistakes, even the geniuses such as myself...

Well I spoke with the tow company. Was very polite. Even pointed out that I made a point to come to the them first rather than just hitting them with AAA.
I was pretty disappointed to hear from them that the tow driver completely denied even picking up the car backwards, let alone pulling it. He said I was lying. I almost lost it, but stayed calm. Spoke with AAA today and they are getting a supervisor on it and he is going to get back to me soon.
The tow guy had seemed like a good guy. He told me they are competing to expand their AAA contract to other parts of the island so I was surprised that they blew me off like that.
After so much work on the ole girl only to have her torn away from me. Well, we will see soon hopefully what may come of it.
Thank you everyone for all the advice, I'll keep ya updated.

I've seen AAA let my parents down one time when an illegal without a driver's license hit them and took off and when caught pretended not to speak English. The Police was called and the brother of this kid came and they both apologized profusely but when the report was written with each party aside the story got changed and the kid with the Corolla won out that day over a Mercedes driver (dad). Hmmm and AAA did nothing and paid for everything. Illegal and no license and admitting fault till the opportunity arose.
That said, been with AAA myself since 85 and not once did they let me down so you should be in good hands. Hope the girl survives the complications.
Blessings,

Oh... I missed that part. Yeah, I believe you have a very good chance of recourse through AAA... didn't realize you had initiated the tow service through them. I'd say you may very well be in luck there.
And since the tow guy lied about it, I would ride it for all it's worth.
I believe you are going to need a rental car... ASAP
Good Luck!

I would suggest you take the car to a Volvo dealership and have them check the car out and give you a repair estimate so you'll have one on hand. Then have them, yourself or someone else look under the car for "clean spots" where the tow guy hooked on to the car, take a few photos ASAP with the date stamp on them, save a copy to your computer. If you can find these marks, call the tow company back and AAA and ask them to send someone out to verify the marks. Usually dirt is knocked off of the bottom side of a car somewhere when they hook-n-book.

Also, you may not have got a receipt, but AAA probably would have had one forwarded on to them for the service. I believe some company's write narratives to what happened, see if they have that also.
Best of luck.
Sounds like a bad deal.

Speed has never killed anyone, suddenly becoming stationary... That's what gets you.

Even though he's lying about not telling you to put it in park it would be helpful to just get the guy to admit he towed it backwards. He shouldn't have even be doing that... even with the tranny in neutral it is very hard on it.volvosurfin wrote:Hi all,
I was tired and not thinking much when the tow guy asked me to put the car in park, pull the e-brake and lock the steering wheel. OK...sure. When I wasn't payin attention he began towing backwards, I looked up and he was pulling it backwards. He pulled it about 15-20 ft before he stopped.

Flatbeds are always preferable for this (tow operators who don't know which end to hook up)and other reasons.

Get the most expensive estimate possible and that will be the place
