I went to take my kiddo to her 9 month appointment with my wife and we got into my '84 240 wagon and I tried to start it. It acted like the battery was duying...it did the "ruurrr rurr rur" over and over. Then it would act like it was going to start...then act like it was a dead battery again. Then finally it came to life. So leaving the hospital the volvo started up first try no problems, this has happened a few times in the past couple weeks. It also seems to always take a couple trys to get it to start whenever we first drive it in the day.
Any insight is appreciated.
More...but slightly different starting issues.

Try cleaning your positive and negitve posts on the battery, its just a 10mm wrench to brake the clamp loose then clean good with a mixture of baking soda and water. clean the terminal and the clamp. After your done with that, use some dilectric grease on the terminal and tighten the clamps.
If this procedure does not solve your problem, have your battery tested. When was the last time it was replaced. They last usualy 3 to 5 years.
