You don't need a Volvo mechanic. Any good reputable Mechanic can tell you what is going on with your suspension. It is a very, very, very typical Rack and Pinion setup. Everything is straight forward.

Thanks all for your help. For the completion of this thread I thought I should report that was the ball bearing that needed replacing (as suggested by fazool), a far simpler job than full suspension work. At least now we know what these symptoms might be.
Thanks again!
Thanks again!

Hi shelterit & fazool,
How much play was there in the bearing to cause that much damage to the wheel? Did it flop around or wobble when you shook the wheel when it was still on the car and/or did it make any groaning noises also? Thanks!

Hi BKM,
No, I even took the wheel off and couldn't really tell the left from the right front wheel (and the left wheel was confirmed to be just fine by the mechanic). There was a little movement in the right wheel but not a serious wobble (just the usual centimeter back and forth), but not enough to make me think it even was the ball joint. However, the mechanic said it was a miracle I didn't loose the whole thing while driving; any serious bump would have pulled it right off and caused serious damage (we drove it very carefully). My biggest problem was getting non-original parts for it, but no can do, so expensive it became. The situation might be better outside Australia.
Regards,
Alex
