stalling out and low idle
stalling out and low idle
I have a 1999 v70 wagon and I have been having problems with the car stalling out as of late. It started out as only stalling once in a while, but now it is anytime I come to a stop. It seems to happen more often when the a.c. is on. I don't know if there is a simple diagnosis for this problem or if there are 100s of reasons this could be happening. To me it seems as if it might have something to do with whatever controls the idle. I don't know much about this car, for I have only owned it about 6 months or so. The car only has 77,000 miles on it.

Yours being a '99, sounds like it might be the ETM issue. Check out Don's ETM section here on this board.

Thank You for your quick response. I'm sorry but I am fairly new to forums of any kind. I looked around a little and could find nothing on Dons ETM section anywhere. If you could direct me where and how to find it I would greatly appreciate it. Thanx again.

Try this: www.vexedvolvo.org
See if any of the stuff mentioned on that site seems to apply to your car and its current symptoms.

Also check the official engine stalling thread on this forum. Lots to read.
Please post the results from the visit to the shop.
I'd be curious if at all related to the problem I had with 2000 V70 at about 65k mi. Turns out likely not the ETM in my case (which may be rare?) - my problem is oil fouling the ETM which then cannot function properly at slow idle. Cleaning the ETM solves the symptom, but not the problem in the long run.

If oil is fouling the ETM, the breather box/ flame trap MUST be cleaned or replaced. Your problem should then be solvedV70sorry wrote:Also check the official engine stalling thread on this forum. Lots to read.

Do you guys think that maybe I should clean the flame trap and maybe change the pcv before I go to the dealer complaining about the ETM. I would hate to have to pay them for diagnostics check, if that is not the problem.
Another thing I have noticed is that I have white smoke coming from the dipstick when the car is running. I don't know if that would be another symptom of the ETM failing or if it is another problem. So add that to the car bogging down and having trouble downshifting, car stalling when steering wheel is turned to the max, rough idle with a.c. running, and just plain rough idle whith nothing on but the engine.
I don't know if it was a mistake buying this car or what, it looks like a million bucks but runs like *#@!.

White smoke from the dipstick tube is definitely the pcv system clogged and adding positive crankcase pressure, which the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) system is suppose to take care of if working properly. The hose and oil separator/trap replacement is a bear...the intake manifold has to come off. You should get an indy to do the replacement for you (unless you want to tackle this on your own...count at least 5-6 hours of your time) and have them also clean your flame trap and throttle body while they're at it. You'll need an intake manifold gasket and throttle body gasket while youre at it. go to www.fcpgroton.com web site and call fcpgroton and ask them for a pcv "kit" for your car. YOu didn't screw up buying this car...you get this taken care of and you'll love it! If all the above doesn't do the trick then go to the dealer for the ETM software download....well, no, go to the dealer for it anyway and it should stablize your idle issue further (it's free anyway). You really need to do the pcv system anyway as the extra pressure will eventually blow out your rear main seal, then you really will hate this car.
