2001 volvo S80 electrical problem

My 2001 Volvo S80 does not have any power to the instrument cluster or to most features on the center console.
The a/c controls do not work. Control features on the steering wheel are functional/
the turn signal indication on the instrument panel does not work but the turn signals outside the car work.
I have checked the battery connections on the terminals and they are good. I can find no bad fuses.
A local shop that says it is a "dealership alternative" could not get a good signal for the code that would indicate the problem.
i have an appointment this Friday at a Volvo dealer and I am bracing myself for a big bill.
I have also checked another web site and the mechanic said it could be the driver information module (DIM) or the Central Electronic Module.
Can someone tell me if they have experienced the same problem or possibly know the root cause?
