850 odometer gear quality

Post by alschnertz »

I'm going to fix the odometer on our '95 854T.
I read the great write-up and thank you all for the advice.

My question though is about the quality of the replacement gears.
I'm desperate to save some money so I was going to buy a gear off eBay. But I'm usually skeptical about items on eBay.
I saw a few different gears - white, black (made of "delrin plastic?), brass etc.
They're all around the same price. Is one better than another?

Thanks.

I am not sure about the quality of one over the other but one thing I will say is replace both gears together. I had occasion to change one that was stripped on mine. Thinking I would save money and only change one I put it all back together only to have the other gear strip in less than a mile :x . Unless you like pulling the dash do it right and change both

I know the guy who makes them for my sponsors. At least they stocked his last time I checked. They're quality parts made in the US.

Call my sponsors and ask if the gears they sell are made in the US. If they are, it's his work.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

Both gears? When i purchased a gear from iPd or FCP, only one was offered for sale. Didn't know about "changing both"?

I can't remember for sure but when I purchased mine they were identified by the number of teeth. Of course I had only ordered one(the small one) because I was led to believe this is the one that fails. As stated in previous thread I found out that is not always the case. Consequently I had to order the second gear. I want to say I ordered them from Swedishcarparts.

I buy all of mine from Jeff Caplan at www.odometergears.com . He may actually supply the gears for IPD and FCP but I am not sure.

I have yet to have one fail. I have been tempted to buy just the small gear but on all three of the cars that I have changed them out on the large gear, while intact, was kinda mushy and I doubt it would have lasted very long.

I also changed both gears, and bought them from odometergears.com. I don't like taking off the dash cover, like to minimize the number of times that is done.

Thanks for the input.
I am going to roll the dice and purchase just the one 15 tooth gear.

Perhaps I will end up removing the dash twice, but I'm willing to take the gamble to save a few bucks.
It sounds like others have been successful with just the small gear.
I'll be careful, but yes, it will be on my mind whether I should have changed both. At least that would not be a catastrophic failure. We'll see...
