i have about 166000 miles on my 98 xc70.
In the last 3000 miles I had volvo replace the pcv system. Then I replaced the cam sensor crank sensor, tps, cap rotor changed front and rear cam seals as well...and a new timing belt while doing the front end seals.
I had a major oil leak from the intake came for a while now and went and did all the seals after the pcv.
After doing the seals I topped the oil off to compenstate for the loss. I may have put in a bit too much.
Soon after i noticed splashes of oil over the engine. about 2 weeks later now i check my oil and its almost empty.
It looks to come from the top of the dipstick. When revving the engine the dipstick pops out about half an inch.
Could I just need a new dipstick? Any insight out there?

Is there still smoke coming out of the dipstick while the engine is running (and warmed up?)?When revving the engine the dipstick pops out about half an inch.

Sounds to me like someone messed up the PCV job. You can try to do a compression test to see if the compression is good.

Only thing I can think of, besides a bad piston ring. Oil should NOT be forced up the whole dipstick under any normal circumstance.
If it were leaking at the bottom O-ring where the dipstick attaches to the engine, that would be a different matter and as simple as just replacing that.
Basic steps for a compression test for you:
http://autorepair.about.com/od/enginetr ... test_8.htm
Basically, disconnect your wire from the ignition coil to the distributor and unplug all of the fuel injectors. Hold the throttle wide-open while cranking, and do the compression test on a warmed up engine.
