Keep your fingers crossed and be prepaired for another non start as the pumpscan die a sometimes slow death. Got word from the shop yesterday confirming that the pump in fact was my issue. Ordered the kit last night and it'll be here this morning. $101.74 and $100 labor

Sounds more and more like a fuel pump issue. Next time it won't start, gently rap on the fuel tank with a block of wood or remove the access cover from the top and gently knock on the top of the fuel pump. If it starts, it's 99% it's the fuel pump.

If you have 225K miles on the car with the original pump it might be a good idea to replace it anyway.

Does the '93 have an access panel or is the pump burried in the tank? Reason I ask is that the 93 seems to be a totally different animal than the other years.

Well, it happened again about an hour ago. Thank god it was in the driveway! I pulled the trunk carpet up, removed the access panel and had my son crank it while I listened - nothing. No sound from the pump. I had him crank it again and this time I rapped on it with a wrench and BOOM! It started without hesitation and I heard the pump ... uh ... pumping I guess. Diagnosis: bad fuel pump. Now, I looked on fcpgroton and they have a bunch of options. Do I need to get the complete assembly for $300 or can I just get an insert for considerably less? Also, they have 2 different inserts; one for $195 from Bosch and one for $125 from Hella - Pierburg. Is it worth $75 for the Bosch?

Nice, thanks for the link! 70 bucks is a far cry better than $200 for the stupid Bosch. I did find what I assume is the correct pump, but the site says that it's for a 4-cyl engine, not a 5. Is that just a typo?

Also, other than the cost, is there any difference between this and the OEM pump? Is one better than the other? I'm not afraid to spend the cash for a decent pump and will buy the Bosch if it is better.

Okay guys.. I just want to make sure that the fuel pump is the issue before I shell out the cash for a new one. These aren't cheap, so I just want to make sure...

Issues:
1- Once in a while, no start. Doesn't matter the level of gas in the tank or the temperature outside.

2- Durring a no-start, I remove the access panel to the fuel pump and while someone is cranking the starter (no sound coming from the pump), I rap on the pump with the but-end of a screwdriver. The pump will kick in after a second and the car will start.

3- I've owned the car for about 1.5 years. The engine has stalled once and that was last summer. I don't know why it did that, it just did and started right back up again.

4- I had an idle hunting problem, but it seems to be resolved (replaced throttle pos sensor & cleaned throttle body).

That's it. I'd like to place the order asap, so any assistance will help. I'm not too sure about my ability to retrofit that pump listed above myself and my mechanic says that since the car has 225k miles, I really should get the whole assm, not just the pump itself.

Thoughts?

If cost is a concern might it be easier to call erie volvo and grab a used one? They provide a lifetime replacement warrantee.

Cost is always a concern... I just don't want to throw $300 in parts plus labor at a problem and not fix it. That's why I asked for opinions on the simptoms I list and if the pump is the most likely problem.

I had a similar problem a few weeks back - I was out driving - the car stalled and it would not start (97 850 non turbo) and it would crank but not catch ....it turned out to be the ignition coil....replaced it and it has been fine ever since.
