When to replace a Volvo ?

Post by ismailkimyacioglu »

Hi all,

I drive a 98 S70 2.0T at 237.000 km for 16 months and this is my first car. I am very happy with it indeed. It is like a fast and luxurious tank.

Up to now, I have replaced timing belt, repaired the relay for the engine start-up, and the radiator. The last one was repaired a few days ago. My technician told me that if a car has a broken radiator, it means that you need to buy another car. Is it true ? I am from Turkey and I can easily say that Volvo is known for its durability and extremely strong body. However, mostly people believes that spare parts are too expensive and therefore, not popular around here. So, I doubt whether technicians also know this car very well. He told me that nobody knows what is the next failure ?

I have learned the repairing solution for the relay here. So I know that there is a lot of knowledgeable people here in this forum. And could you please tell me;

1.) Is 236000 km too much for a S70 ?
2.) 14 year is too much for a Volvo ?
3.) Do I really need to buy another car because of the fear that it will bring a worse problem soon ?

By the way, my Volvo has no accident record and when I first purchased it, we had opened the cap for oil tank while running the engine and not even a small drop of oil was coming out. That time my technician told me that this car has a very strong engine. So, knowing these pluses confuses me. Because, if a car wasn't involved in an accident and the engine is at a very good condition, then problems like radiator should be normal because of the km it run.

Please tell me what you think and about your experiences.

Thanks in advance !

Not at all. 218,000 on my Volvo and it's still going great.

They all have a mid-life crisis sometime and break 10 expensive things at once, but they will keep running strong forever.

My 1998 S70 T5 had 300,000+ KM and it ran better than it did when it had half that KM, only got rid of it when it was totalled.

Dear Pauloil,

Thanks for the reply. No, I don't have any problem with the replacement. It's already done. And yes, it was original Volvo product.

Dear jblackburn,

Thanks for the comment. I do agree with you as I had also replaced the ABS control unit, which was a very expensive part.

Dear IVIUSTANG,

Thank you for the reply.

Eventually, now I can say that I do feel better now. In fact, I was a BMW fan since my university years, 1996. And I was dreaming of buying a E39 528i or 530i. But at that time, I had to buy a car and didn't have enough funds to buy a BWM. Then, I told myself, let's buy something else and later on, can think of buying a BMW again. Now, I say that hopefully, I chose a Volvo. It looks so usual than a BMW but functions much more better than it I think, especially in snowy roads, it is a breeze to drive a Volvo.

Once again, thank you for all the comments. It is good to be a part of this forum.

I have over 400,000kms ( metric) on it. I think that you should keep yours. I have replaced a lot more than that on mine ( some things twice actually). Wait until you have to replace those knox censors and all of those other funky things....

Keep it man!

Mine's got 17 years and over 302,000 km (189,000 mi) on it and runs damn near perfectly.

Just don't cheap out on the maintenance. Only use Volvo or Bosch parts, and you can drive to the moon and back.

So to speak.

Hi Chesterpaw and Nevada1906,

Thanks a lot for the replies. It really made me feel confident to hear all those comments. As noted above in my first message, Volvo is not a well-known car in Turkey. Everybody here knows that it is a very strong car like a tank. Like one of my friends told me that a S70 or 850 crashes with VW Caddy. And Caddy was splitted to two parts.

These are known, but people don't know much about the maintenance and part durability. So, thanks again for all these comments.
