544 coil replacemnt

Post by Ronn »

My 15 and 16 yr old sons have "discovered" my 62 Volvo 544 in the back garage. It ran fine when I parked it 5 years ago.... Not getting spark and pretty sure the coil is bad.

This is a 12 volt system. It has the armored wiring from the starter switch to back of coil. I am looking for advise on how best to replace this coil with a standard 12 volt coil. The coil I have from the local NAPA store has a + and - post as well as the center distributor wire. The existing 544 coil has single post for the condenser wire and the distributor wire.

Any trouble shooting advise, wiring diagram for coil/starter, replacement tips appreciated. I need help looking like I know what I am doing in front of the two teenagers!

The single terminal setup has me scratching my ever balding head a bit. The typical points and condenser ignition system has the + terminal to key switched positive battery voltage and the - terminal to the condenser and points. The high tension lead of course goes to the distributor.

A resource for help on the older Volvos is Lamar Automotive in Pittsburg, KS. Here is a link to their website:

They can likely answer any questions you have with a quick phone call.

The 12V+ wire is inside that armored cable leaving bottom of coil. You'll have to run a wire from the resistor you should find under dash that the armored wire runs from now to the + terminal of new coil.
