Good day everybody
After recently doing a tranny flush I have a bee in my bonnet and would like to change the oil for the transfer box & rear diff. Are there any suggestions on how to do this?
I was told that the transfer box & gearbox share the same oil. Is this true? Also do I use the same oil for the transfer box & rear diff as I did for the gearbox.
Thank you all once again

Anybody have any links or pictures of transfer case and diff oil change out?
Gathering information on complete fluid change out on my 04 XC90 T6.
Plan on going with Redline 75/90W in diff and transfer case, trans takes any Dexron III?
Thanks

The diff has one oil and the AWD coupling unit (Volvo calls it Active On-demand Coupling, AOC. It is made by Haldex and is often called that name) that goes in the casing in front uses a unique oil that to my knowledge has no equivalent. That GM gearbox T6 has the angle gear that can use the 75W90 Redline.
Transmission uses D-III. Synthetic D-III would be a great thing to use but does cost more.

A bit of a late reply, but I just did the driveline fluids on my wife's XC90 so I figured I would share what I learned.
I am a big AMSOIL fan, but honestly, with the cost of replacing these components, I thought it wise to just go with the specified Volvo fluids where there wasn't an AMSOIL product recommended. For $100 in fluids, it's a good piece of mind in my opinion.
Note that with the T6 AWD (on my wife's 2004, anyway), it's got a chain driven angle gear up front; from what I understand this was to save on space. What this means is that there are 4 different places for fluid to go AFTER the transmission.
For the transmission, I just use full-synthetic AMSOIL multi-vehicle ATF. The spec for the transmission is D-IIIG for the GM-based tranny. I typically drain/fill the transmission every other oil change (~4-5qts). My hope is that it will prolong the transmission life, though it could just be a waste of money.
These are the driveline fluids I used:
Angle Gear Chain Drive Fluid: Volvo P/N: 1161745 [API GL-4 75W-80]
Bevel Gear Fluid (Front Angle Gear): Volvo P/N: 31259380 [API GL-5 75W-90]
Haldex Fluid (Contraption In Front of Rear Axle): [unsure on P/N]
Rear Differential (Rear Axle Housing): Volvo P/N: 1161620 [API GL-5 80W]
The oil for the front bevel gear was a rediculous $40/liter (at least you only need one), the rest of them were around $20-25/L IIRC.

You could just use one oil and not waste money to change it every other oil change.XVTer wrote:

They also have an inexpensive Oil Analysis Program so instead of just wasting your money you can know exactly what is going on with your car.

I only do the transmission fluid every other oil change due to it being the dreaded GM-based transmission mated to the T6. The driveline fluids I have only done once in the past 30k miles and decided to stick to the Volvo oil.BKM98 S70 T5 wrote:You could just use one oil and not waste money to change it every other oil change.

The oil analysis is interesting. I'll have to try that sometime

If that is the same GM transmission as my friend's 2003 Regal you'll definitely want to Swepco it with the 714 20W. Friend last weekend traded her car in for a new Camry. She replaced the Head Gasket last year Intake Manifold (Coolant Leak) a month ago and right after the Transmission started to go.XVTer wrote:I only do the transmission fluid every other oil change due to it being the dreaded GM-based transmission mated to the T6. These folks all use Swepco
ANDIAL has used two different gear oils on the air cooled Porsches; one was a standard Penzoil for the most civilian of drivers. For the performance minded drivers and racers, we have always turned to SWEPCO 201. We have used it for over 20 years and this oil has never failed us (Product comes in 1 gallon containers and can only be shipped ground).

Kind of an old thread, but I went to the dealership the other day to get these fluids and wanted to post the part numbers I was given. One of each of these plus a bottle of coolant was around $200. In hindsight I probably overpaid...

hi I'm trying to find out the torque and sequence for the bolts to replace the head on a Volvo xc90 t6 awd 2004 I have to reset the timing
Sorry to resurrect a thread from the dead, but I'm at a complete loss on these references to "chain drive oil". I've changed the rear diff, AOC, transmission and angle gear, but what is this other fluid? And where does one even access it?
Google searches yield very little outside of this thread.
