New 2005 XC90 owner here

Post by 99VulvaS70 »

Hi all,

Just bought a 2005 XC90 for my wife. She fell in love with it immediately having driven a 1999 S70 for the last few years.

Anyway. If any of you have some tips, pointers, warnings that you could throw my way, I would really appreciate it. I do all my own maintenance so any advice is welcome.

Thanks,
Dan

Great choice.
The engine care is the same as for your 99.
The transmission is a 5 speed auto that requires a special fluid. It is a spec JWS3309 also known as Toyota T-IV.
IF the ATF is really dark then a drain and fill of the 3.5 qts at 3 consecutive oil changes should get it clean or a one time flush. Opinions do vary. I prefer the low mess consecutive drain and fill unless there is a shifting issue that makes me want the old fluid out NOW.
I recommend re-packing the front and rear CV joints on the rear driveshaft.
The front is adjacent to catalyst and the grease gets baked and the CV joint will initially vibrate or rattle. Usually once it is noisey then packing it may not be enough and it will need $$$$ replacement.
Don't let the 105K timing belt replacement slip by either.

Many thanks man. The timing belt is tops on the list. The other items you mentioned will follow closely.
