fake overheating? 1994 850

i was driving my car on a 100 or so mile trip to NH when the temperature gauge in my 1994 850 sedan suddenly spiked into the red. It stayed there and would not go down. I pulled over and left the car off for 3 hours, and when i turned it back on, still red. I think this is a problem simply with the sensor, because nothing mechanically seemed wrong with the car. It happened once before but went back down, i took it to my mechanic and he found nothing wrong. Does anyone know what this could be, or whether or not it could be fater. (all coolant levels were fine and no fuses were out, no warning lights lit)

It is possible that your coolant temperature sensor is faulty.

Check the fault codes using Socket 2 of Module A. If code 1-2-3 comes up that is the problem indicated.
