2003 V70 2.4 DIM problems after iMIV install?

Post by hanesj75 »

Hello all,

I have a 2003 Volvo V70 2.4, 143k miles. I recently installed an iMIV unit to interface with the radio. I was careful to disconnect the battery before installing the iMIV, and when reconnecting the battery I made sure the key was in position II. The iMIV works great, and I did not get an SRS light or anything at all when I was done.

However, ever since this install was completed, the car occasionally makes a beep and flashes the yellow triangle on the dash while the car is running. There is never any message on the display. At first, that was the only symptom. Now, the clock will not stay set, and sometimes even scrolls through time like I'm turning and holding the little setting-control, even though I'm not. So far that's all the erratic behavior (gauges and turn indicators still work fine). I'm wondering what happened, and if it will get worse. I tried resetting everything by unplugging the battery again (for about 8 hours) but this had no effect.

Since it definitely occurred after installing this iMIV, I would doubt that it's chafing under the seat or a sudden development of dry solder joints or similar physical problems. Instead it seems like I damaged something electrically when reconnecting the battery.

Any ideas? Would this be something that sending the DIM to Xemodex could fix, or are there other things I can try? I have not tried to plug in a scanner to retrieve codes or anything yet - but even that would not cause the clock to go screwy.

Thanks!

-John

There is of course always a chance that the problems are unrelated, and indeed it did happen to develop a fault at an odd time.

To help eliminate the chance the iMIV is causing a problem, how easy is it to disconnect it? Just to be sure for example the device isn't causing odd problems on the power lines, comm bus, etc. I would try this as a first test. I don't know what all is involved in the installation of the iMIV, but I would look carefully to see if anything is shared between the DIM & wires you disturbed or wires around there. Perhaps there is a poor connection (power or comm-bus) which is occasionally glitching the display.

Second, do you have access to someone with with VIDA? I would see if any fault codes are stored in case it is something that can be seen there.

Finally, does the setting-control switch still have any effect? Is it always scrolling as you describe or just sometimes?

Regards,

-Colin
