Converting to a pillar antenna

I was wondering if anyone has converted the quarter panel power antenna to the older A pillar antenna. I have a 91 sedan with a cheapo aftermarket antenna. I don't want to spend the money on an OE power unit that will likely not last long anyway. I got my hands on an A pillar antenna from a 1984 240.

If anyone has done it, can you please let me know how you did it and the pitfalls I want to avoid. I an especially interested in how to get through the pillar properly and fishing the antenna wire.
