1999 Volvo s70 Engine Stall

Post by park1013 »

Hey, I have a 1999 s70 nonturbo with @ 1600000 miles. I can crank the car and after it runs smooth about a minute at 1000 rpms, it will slowly start to idle down and stall. Each subsequent start is the same just with a shorter run time, until eventually, the car will not turn over until it has sat a while. I don't know if it matters, but we just got the car back from the shop for an ABS module and Refridgerant charge the day this problem started. As far as I can tell the ETM has been changed by a previous owner and the MAF seems to be fine. Any thoughts are apprectiated - Thanks in advance!

I would try jumpering the fuel pump relay to see if it's the culprit.

Great! I will try that this evening. One thing I forgot to mention is that after it stalls, the battery, oil and upward arrow dash lights all come on. Does this sound like a common occurance with a bad relay?

That's normal for most cars when they stall.

But the slowly dying out does sound like the relay is overheating and cutting out fuel pressure as it goes out.

...and if I were you, I'd remove the cover over the relays (One my 97 850...four T25 bolts remove the "frame" around the fuses array(which I find to one very fine point on these cars) Note the numbers on that relay...there are various models/colors, so just to be sure you order the correct one. Search this forum for good pictures of which is the fuel.

I have nearly identical problems as the original poster. It will stall after driving 20-30 minutes, usually at a stop sign, or pulling into a parking lot. Jumpering the relay terminals will indicate if the relay is dead, which would mean you can't start the car at all. Will it also indicate a relay overheating problem? I don't mind replacing the relay if that's what it is, but can't afford buy a lot of parts.

Got back from Autozone. P0171 is the code. Picked up some MAF cleaner. Also read on another site that not replacing the oil dipstick can cause excess air intake and create problems too. Wow.
