OBDII in Volvo V40 '97?

I have got a Volvo V40 from '97. Because I think there are some misfires at the sparkplugs I bought a (cheap ass) elm237 bluetooth device. The connection with the dongle is no problem. I see the ELM237 connection but the dongle can't get a connection with my ECU.

I used Torque, Scanmaster, ScanTool.net but all same problems.
So what am I doing wrong and has the car an OBDII protocol or maybe EOBD?

The OBD11/EOBD problem is a common one in European market cars.

The OBDII Federal requirements apply to cars sold in the United States from 1996. It does not apply to cars sold anywhere else.

EOBD is the European equivalent of the American OBD II standard, which applies to petrol cars sold in Europe from 2001 (and diesel cars 3 years later).

Some years ago an enterprising Volvo owner worked out how to a basic OBD11 reader for the cars affected. A copy of the instructions is attached:

It works on my 850 but there is no guarantee it will work on the V40.
