Re: Is this a real 850 R?

Post by sandy44 »

Epilogue -- I got some great answers on this post!!! Thank you very much! But after all the analyzing and of searching for the perfect "R" car....(shoot - IPD makes a chrome "R" you can stick on the back of any Volvo) - There were just too many question marks I had that would justify buy a car 1000 miles away. In other words, he who hesitates doesn't always get the car! But... in the process of comparing and re-comparing cars, I discovered a 1983 240 GLT Turbo, 130K in showroom and I sincerely mean showroom condition in Pittsburgh, PA. I do know a 240 when I see one... It was love at first sight. I bought the car from one of the finest guys you'll ever meet who took incredible care on this car! I flew from KC to Pittsburgh and drove it home. It's now in my garage. I guess the elusive "R" car will just have to wait! Hopefully I can get over to St. Louis this summer to show it of a little.

Thanks again for everyone's input!

A friend bought his 83 GLT new. Black exterior those rims in gold and lips polished. IPD Intercooler and Suspension Kit plus large single Euro headlight assembly. The thing was fast for those days as he broke the seal and dialed the Waste Gate. Great looking car as well as yours!

What a beautiful car!!! I would eventually like to pick up a 240 series turbo. I "cut my teeth" on a 240 wagon, I think I'll always have some respect for the 240, I think they have aged well!

Very Nice!! You don't see those up in Montreal, the road salt capitol of North America. I'd love to get a nice Turbo Real, ahh I mean Rear Wheel Drive... Sigh... Congrats!!

Thank-you. Being rear-wheel drive actually saved this car from crumbling from rust. The gentleman I bought the car from, the original owner, didn't drive it during the winter because the rear wheel drive didn't do real well in the snow. Consequently, he stored the car in a friend's warehouse during the winter months. He and his wife drove AWD cars during the Pittsburgh winters. This car has never seen salt. I doubt I will let it see salt when these KC winters come around either!

I think you got a WAY better car there than any "R" around. Something like that has real character. Nice find!

At the risk of offending the R owners, I have tried to persuade myself I need one, out of peer pressure. But I have to say that I really prefer the non lipped, non winged look on an 850, or any other car. The lip and the wing just do not work for me. It comes down to a preference for more sleeklined sporty styling versus more attachments. I think that a straight bodied shiny 850 turbo or non, but with nice wheels, is one of the best looking cars around. The 240 is a nice car with the wheels too, I had a beaten up black 240 turbo in college that I loved.

Brad - that's what i like about my Platinum, the best of both worlds: a wing but no lip :-)

It's a matter of personal preference OF COURSE (sorry to shout just don't want to get flamed :)), but for my taste I agree with Brad that the wing and the lip are both a little silly. Especially the decorative little plastic wing! At least the R bumper has foglight cutouts (I know, not the only way to get them) ...
