740GLE Overdrive

Post by NICK59349 »

Hello, I reviewed the previous posts on this subject but could not find the answer I was looking for so here goes. I have an 86 740GLE with a 4 speed + overdrive. The overdrive will not engage nor will the little green light on the dash come on. I have eliminated the switch on the shifter along with the wiring to the relay, they check good. The wiring from the relay tp the solenoid is also good. I'm getting about 3 ohms through the solenoid which sounds about right. After pinning out the relay it seems to be ok, my transistor troubleshooting skills are a little rusty. The print is showing an inhibitor switch that I'm assuming supplies a ground to the relay allowing it to energize thus powering the overdrive soleniod and the light. I was curious if anyone knows what the inhibitor switch uses to energize it (i.e oil pressure?). Also, the print shows the wire from the inhibitor switch going to pin 86 on the relay but I found that it goes to pin 85, is this correct? I hope someone has some insight on this, I really hate paying someone else to do my work. Also, what type of transmission fluid is recommended for hot temperatures?

Thanks alot

Nick
