Re: Electronics Faulty. ABS Module?

I have a '97 850. Temperature affects the speedometer signal: It works fine in cool/cold weather. But it does not in warm or hot weather.

Cool/cold weather: Speedo works initially. However, after a few minutes of driving (after the engine compartment is warm) all the sudden the speedo needle will just drop down to 0 mph and stay.

Warm/hot weather: Speedo doesn't work at all.

Does this sound like a faulty ABS module (that is being affected by increased temperature)? Also the ABS light remains constantly on in the dash. Thx,

Mike - yes, yours does sound like the ABS module. The solder contacts separate once they warm up.

Thanks Jblackburn! You're always so helpful to everyone on this forum!

Matty Moo,
If you read this thread, does this look like a candidate for ABS module repair (one I can send to you?). Also I was reading briefly about programming issues on some earlier posts. Is that a problem for a 1997?
Thx

Pretty much every single one is going to fail at some point. That's the way it goes, but they're all repairable for the most part unless something is burned up internally.... And that is pretty rare.

There is no programming on the 96-2000 cars.

Matty,
Then I'll be doing business with you very soon.

Question:
-If I remove my ABS module and send to you for repair, will my car still operate except for the antilock brake system?
-Or, is the ABS module interlinked to other systems and removing it would render my car temporarily inoperative?

I'd rather just send you mine and drive it a short period without ABS then re-install it when received back. Thx,

You won't have ABS or a working speedometer for the time being.

Many GPS units have a speedometer in the corner. Or, if you have a smart phone, there are apps you can download that will do it too.

Thx J,

Since the speedo doesn't work most of the time anyway, all I would really be without is ABS for that time.

My main thing was wanting to make sure that if I removed the ABS module and sent it to be repaired, that the car would still be able to start and operate. My concern was what if the "brain" detected the ABS module missing and then disabled ignition temporarily (as a sort of "safety feature" since ABS would be missing from the system). But what you're telling me is the car will still start and drive- just minus ABS of course, and a speedo.

I can live without those for a short period while midwest-abs repairs mine.

Here's something odd. The weather is similar to last week here in Toronto. Maybe up to 10C warmer. Yet after clearing the codes at the dealer on May 17, it hasn't glitched again since. Can't even attempt to reproduce it by jiggling the key if it was a ignition problem.

Edit: I take that back. Matty! Hook me up!

So a local guy is asking for $150 for a used one, and he wants the part number. Where the hell do I find it? He said to get a mirror and look for it in the engine bay...
