Hi Chris A common reason for these cars surging without any codes is a bad MAF sensor. Just unplug the electrical sensor connector while it is surging and if it smooths out you have a bad MAF. Replace these units with Bosch only. Do not by any means use an aftermarket brand. These cars are very picky. BOSCH ONLY MAF Best Regards, SpeedyPete

My car surged and decellerated on the highway or whenever. The tach's would go sky high then down for no reason too. I felt so terrified, it was like the engine didn't know what gear it was in. The problem was a sensor switch on the accelerator pedal. I feel as if it led to the demise of my transmission a little too early .. 75,000 miles on my 1995 850 GLT
