Re: Air bags Deployed-Left front damage

Post by Ben850 »

I thought I would update this thread. I have photos on other threads, but I forgot how involved I was with the story on this particular thread.

The car was rescued and revived. It was a project getting it back in order, and pretty much all the advice from everyone was not disregarded. I taught myself a few things along the way. Thanks for looking.

The photos can speak for themselves, but I combined a '96 front bumper with original '93 Alter I headlights and corner lights. I am happy with the look. That takes care of the superficial aspect.
I replaced,

Bumper ( $36.20 Complete '96 reinforcement bar/absorber/top cover/spoiler)
Header panel. ($36.)
Headlight/corner light($60. combined)
Wiper motor/arm/blade - (headlight) (free)
Radiator-(salvaged from '00 v70 with fan/shroud/relays included. $62.00 !!)
Fender- (refurbished one I already had)
Both front seat belts ($7. ea.)
One B-pillar cover (free)
SRS-system ECU (free)
Steering wheel/airbag/clockspring ($40. for all, and upgraded to leather)
Dashpad/airbag ( $36. Airbag included)
Windshield-New ( $223. total-installed)
I also changed the door and fender moldings to the larger Alter II type, to match the new bumper. ($12.00 all six pieces)

The only part I chose new was the windshield, even though I did get one from the junk yard for $30. it had wiper scratches and for $70 more than I was going to pay for installation, I just got a new one.

So do the math. I did spend about $200. on hydraulic tools and rigging parts, but I now own it.

The photos did not upload in chronological order, but I think you can figure it out.
Thanks for the input. It was a learning experience on many levels.

I had $5.00, and some time on my hands this long weekend. So why not?

The grille that I painted is from a spare hood. The one I used for comparison was not hurt in the collision.
The hood that is still on the car is the one from the collision. I will eventually replace it. But for now, the 50-at-50 rule applies. (Fifty feet away, at fifty miles an hour. It looks great.)

Thanks again for looking.
I will add subjects with photos in new threads, that apply to some of the individual repairs.
Have fun.

Thanks, I could'nt let it go. I'm expecting a delivery from FCP tomorrow of steering and suspension parts to tighten up the front. It never ends.

I would imagine close to $1,000. parts and tools, and another $1,000 to get it back from the tow yard.( an abbreviated list is posted in this thread earlier on this page.)

But I still think it was worth it. I could have started a completely new project car for $2,000, but I had already done so much to this one that I had grown attached. I'm sure others know the feeling.
I could not let the dishonest tow company have it either.

jimmy57 wrote:Yes the whole dash. When the pass side bag deploys it would be very unusual for it to not crack the structure of the dash. It would do that when these cars were less than year old and the dashes weren't cracking from hitting a bump like they do now.
I had to revive this thread with that quote.

The dash mounts in the '96 wagon were worse than the '93 Sedan after the collision.

I don't attribute it to the driving type of the previous owner, neglect or mileage. I do know the plastics had changed over the years. Using different compounds and polymers while maintaining a green footprint.
Revival of the '96 Turbo wagon is here.

That being said, the mutt that the U. S. version of the '93 850 GLT had become, has some intricacies that have given myself a revival to automotive enjoyment. It has taken me through two extremely cold Michigan winters with no issues.
Of course, stage zero was involved with full assessments of issues that could be addressed at a later time. (i.e. minor rear main seal leak. Noisy delta link bushings. Faulty right front headlight wiper motor. That being a '93 which I had grabbed another spare that I had checked to be working, will go in soon.)
Another rant ended. A joyful experience more than not.

At this point, I feel I know more than I had expected about this car. They do seem to be infectious. (Babble 0ver)

Before everyone gets confused on why her insurance is not paying, Michigan has a very different set of rules. Please refer to PDF for clarity.

Would not have applied to my situation, but good to know.
