Alternator belt help 740 1990

I need to replace what I think is an alternator belt on my 1990 740 station wagon. The belt is in the front of the engine, on top of where the AC belt once was. Could anyone be so kind to post a link or run me through what I need to do to replace this belt. (The old one is frayed and beginning to make "unhealthy" noises.) Thanks in advance

That saves a little work and time.

What happened to the belt?

The alternator belt requires two nuts to be loosened, not removed, other than the adjusting tensioner bolt. One is at the back of the long top fixing bolt; the other is at the bottom in front. The tensioner bolt is beneath on the side. Turn the tensioner screw anticlockwise to move the unit toward the engine and loosen the belt. You should check the three rubber alternator bushings when you replace this belt. They can be pressed out and replaced by hand. When you have the new belt on adjust the tension using the tensioner screw only. Once you have the correct tension lock the alternator in position with the the other two nuts. Check the tension at the mid point of the longest run of the belt by pressing down firmly with your thumb. The belt should deflect between 1/4" and 1/2".

To help you understand where the different bolts are the attached is from VADIS.

Whilst you are changing this belt check the belt for the power steering. It is easier to change the belts at the same time.
