Troublesome 740 GLE, frequent start issues after driving.

Post by ronisolomondds »

I purchased a 1990 740 GLE 16 Valve wagon last October from the third owner. When I purchased the car, I was told that the engine had been completely rebuilt approximately 10k ago. The car had 174k at the time of purchase and it currently has 181k. Over the course of the last four months, I have had recurring issues with starting the car. The first time the problem manifested itself was after a 7 hour drive to NYC, I parked the car for a half hour, and when I returned, the engine wouldn't start. It wouldn't turn over, nothing. After an hour of waiting, the engine fired up as usual and drove without a problem. I brought it to my mechanic the following day and he couldn't replicate the issue. More recently, I would drive the car for an afternoon, two to three hours, and the car would refuse to start.

Occasionally, when I go to start the car, the engine starts, but drops revs quickly and shuts off. I can remedy this problem by keeping my foot lightly on the gas when starting. One thing I have noticed is that the temperature gauge never goes past half way. I am wondering if I have an issue with the temperature sensor. The radiator looks okay, hoses are good, and my coolant levels are where they should be.

Any help would be much appreciated!
