Newbie Question: Is this Air Intake(?) Pipe Broken?

Post by joe_f »

Kind of a dumb question, but I'm just getting started in maintaining my own car (as much as I can). I have a 98 s70 standard model (no turbo). When I was changing out the battery, I noticed that one of the what I believe to be air intake pipes wasn't connecting to anything. The pipe runs out of the radiator area back behind/to the side the battery where it looks like it should connect to another pipe. These are pictures from other posters (sorry for borrowing them).

On the end of the pipe, back behind/to the side of the battery, the end of this pipe looks like should connect to another pipe that meets with it, but it's just sitting against it... not connected at all. If I move it around there's a gap between this pipe and the next one. I wasn't sure if this was incorrect, or if that's the way it's supposed to be. I'm guessing the former.

If it is supposed to be connected, how do I connect it? I can't find that exact pipe on any parts sites, oddly.

I'll try to get better pictures soon, I know this is vague. Just sitting at work trying to look stuff up.

Thanks in advance for any help!

That should go into the air box filter housing. There should be a hole in the box that the air dam will just pop into .

Thanks for the quick reply!

So maybe the pipe itself broke. The part I circled is sitting up against another pipe that runs into the filter box. It looks pretty close the picture of the parts on the bench above though.

Do you happen to know the name of that part?

I don't think it's broken - they should just snap together at the air box. Pull it off the radiator intake and attach it to the airbox, forcing them together with both hands. Then reconnect the little snorkel at the radiator.
