2001 Volvo s60 system shutt down
I bought thes 2001 s60 with 54k on it not too long ago and once in the freeway all systems shutt down. I only had power to radio and the A/C fan...no signals no instrument panel and nothing worked. There was all these messages saying brake failier, emission controm failier and SRS failier message. Engine ran as long as it was on, once turned off would not start again. There was a clicking sound coming from under the driver's side dash. This went on for as long as 5 minutes the first time and 10 minutes the 2nd and 3rd times. Took it to the dealer and they charged me for clearing bunch of "intermedeate codes" nothing important they said. It happened again yesterday when going home in the freeway....almost had a crash because couldn't pull over (no signals). I had to wait for 10 minuts for the system to reset again. The SRS message stays and has to be cleared by the dealer. I'm scheduled to take it back again. They want me to leave the car with them for couple of days to see what is going on. All I can think of is a faulty module!!?? don't know. Any one's had any problem like this? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks.

Thank you so much for the info. Kind of gives me a piece of mind. Hope it's not something else. Thanks again.Bud wrote:www.VEXEDvolvo.org

There is no guarantee that the ETM is the problem, OR that the garage will admit that the ETM is the problem (sometimes the fault codes conflict erroneously), but it is possible .... and if so, covered under an extended warranty.
VEXEDvolvo is your best information resource, as Volvo doesn't want us to know too much. The truth is very expensive for them, and they have gone to great lengths to deny and conceil it.
Also, you should go to NHTSA.gov and file a report about it, especially the parts where freeway failure is dangerous. The online report forms are a bit of a pain, but shouldn't take more than 10-15 minutes. Be armed with VIN#, dates, etc.
Also, you should contact Volvo Customer Service and raise hell, sometimes they get off their dead asses and actually help a concerned customer with their problems.
Good luck.

Thank you so much Bud, I took the car in today for them to take another look at the problem I also called the Volvo Customer Care and the lady said that she would report the problem to the head technician and the company and said that some one will get in touch with me within a few days. I filed a complaint with NHTSA at the same time. The Service advisor at the Volvo dealership was telling me that they still have to charge me for running the test ($100) and if they find something the charge would be used toward the repair and so I told him not to call me unless they find something wrong with the car. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again.

OK, I got my car back and they told me that they found loose connection to the starter motor!!? and they cleaned up the connections to the fuse box. Everything else is ok they said. I have to wait for a while to see if it happens again. The Service manager called me today on behalf of Volvo of America to find out what was going on with my car and so I explained everything and told him the story that the service advisor told me. He said he'd like to keep track of the problem and asked me to keep him informed. I'd like to metion that they didn't charge me anything for the work they did on my car...

Glad to hear a good story, hope it works out for you.
I used to get good service, and N/C minor repairs at the dealership where I bought my C-70. Then the owners got greedy, and dumped their friendly experienced Service Managers, and it got worse.
Then they dumped the Volvo franchise to specialize in BMW and Subaru (
). The dealership that took on the Volvo franchise (and the very competent Volvo mechanics) just didn't give a shit about it's customers, or the good money we had to pay for authorized service. A story of Greed gone Bad.
Then the ETM debacle arrived, and Volvo showed its true colors: denial, coverup and false blame.
