I know you well Nevada1906. I've run into you for my entire career as an Occupational Health and Safety professional. "OSHA is stupid", "Safety is stupid", "You have to get hurt to do the job". The kind of person who makes fun of their buddies when they obey a safety rule.

But then one of their buddies dies, or loses an arm, or is in a wheelchair for life. And then guess what... they pretty much shut up about the "stupid safety rules". It never fails.

In 1970 when OSHA was formed there were 13,800 workplace fatalities in a workforce of 77 million. In 2005 that had been reduced to 5,300 fatalities in a workforce of 146 million. Personally I don't see that as useless, and it particularly wasn't useless to the half a million American workers who did not die on the job over that 40 years because of OSHA.

Go ahead and reply if you want to, I will not respond because I know that I cannot change your mind.

I know we can't watchdog all risks away but when unknowing or purposely shortsighted people fail to provide a workplace where it is safe then someone needs to address it. I am a consumer and a taxpayer. I and you pay for these blunders either through SS disability or workmen's comp insurance premiums that become a part of the price of an item we buy.
Humans prove everyday that left to their own devices they will not make the best decisions. If those decisions didn't cost the rest of us then I guess we wouldn't have cause to intercede into someone's "life". Assault with a toxic gas is probably more onerous than an assault where someone gives you a black eye but we outlaw direct personal contact assault.

This is my favorite quote from Norman Juster:
" You can swim all day in the Sea of Knowledge and still come out completely dry. Most people do."
