Overdrive on 86 740 Turbo

I just bought an 86 740 turbo with 144K miles. I have a few questions about the overdrive.

The previous owner says that the overdrive switch "broke." How do I tell if it's working? I've read some older posts here and on other forums about how to fix/diagnose relays etc., so I think I'm OK there.

I took it out the other day on the highway and noticed that, while in fourth gear, the shift arrow lights. And intermittently, the engine would race as the car shifted out of fourth gear. Shifting back into fourth took care of this.

Is this indicative of a serious transmission problem?

just recently had a similar problem, switched the over drive selonoid and it's shifted great ever since., I have an extra one off a parts car if you live in jersey, you can have it?? new, I think I payed around 100

Thanks for the offer. I may take you up on it. Since I posted that message, I decided to take a look at the relay and see if it needed to be resoldered. I turned the ignition on, put it in fourth and clicked the switch. No sound from the relay and no lights on the dash.

I popped open the ash tray, reached in for the relay and found .... nothing. Someone had removed it.

I have a relay coming in middle of this coming week. I'll see if that fixes the problem.
