Hi All
(this has prob been covered but I couldn't find anything to relate)
I hope you can point me in the right direction!
The transmission in my 2000 V70se (151k) started slipping / not engaging any gears.
It seems like it only happens when it's cold. When it happens and I turn off the car for a few minutes it will work then for a few minutes.
I would really appreciate any advice you could give me.
BIG THANKS
Dave

Check the fluid level, rool the shifter through the gears 20 times and report back.

While checking the level look at the condition also. Worn out fluid can cause poor to no shifting. If that is the case do a quick Drain and Fill to see if it makes any difference. If it does than go with a Transmission Flush.rspi wrote:Check the fluid level, rool the shifter through the gears 20 times and report back.

Theat's not a PNP issue
This car has a 5 speed, (1st year) and prone to failure
I would do several drain and fills until the fluidis 100% clean, reset adaptions, do a drive cycle and see what happens

Thanks for the info
i forgot to mention that I got a Drain and Fill done on Saturday morning.
I checked the fluid level this morning, it's a nice red/pink color.
When I checked it, I started the car and went through the gears from Park to Low and Back to Park. (stopping for about 2 sec in each selection)
When I checked the level it was low, then I cleaned it and checked it 2 more times and it's was reading over the full line....
Any ideas ?
It still works in all gears when cold. am I looking at a new trans ? please tell me I'm not

An improper amount of fluid could cause it to act up. So could the wrong TYPE of fluid (hopefully they used the JWS 3309 and not standard Dexron-III that all of the other 4-speeds take).
Fluid should always be checked at the HOT mark on the dipstick, with it facing towards the sky. Since you can't drive it to get it hot...
I dunno, at this point, I think I'd try a full flush through the cooler hoses - and make sure that you fill to the proper level after the last pump out. Start with 3-3.5 qts, run it around for a bit, and then check the level again.

Well the doc says it's shot ! and he's been quoted 4k to rebuild it, it comes with a 3 Year or 50k Warranty..
it's a AW55-50/51SN ( if that helps )
Do you think this is a fair price ?
Been thinking of trying to sell it and get something else, but am i just going to run into the same issue again ??
Ideas ?

Being it still functions when cold I would consider a Full Flush before selling it at a lost or spending that much money for a new Trans. I had an 88 Mazda 323 that basically stop moving. After changing the Fluid to Swepco and adding a Hayden Trans-cooler it was back on the road flying though it had a shift flare. I told the person who bought it for $700 that they must use the Swepco and nothing else. During the test drive I would drive it hard for him and he was surprised how fast it was.davemini wrote:

Friend's 2001 Odyssey with ~ 178K original miles had a bad kick-down problem and we flushed it with Swepco and change the motor oil over to Swepco also. The problem has returned slightly after 10,000 miles (still with Swepco Trans and Motor Oil) but he said the stuff is great as the Van is still silent on the road and very powerful. The Swepco just might keep it going as heat seems to be the factor.
Volvo S70 Upper Transmission Hose Removal. Green Clip
Drain and fill first with new Fluid then instead of continuous fill and flush you would stop after 3 quarts to fill with fresh fluid and continue (repeat) till the entire system has been purged
Independent Volvo uses quite a bit of Swepco - I am sure they would not mind you calling for advise on your transmission
