V40 electrics died completely when trying to start

Post by grahamsaunders »

Hi Guys.

New here.

Last night I got into my V40 and switched on the ignition as normal, went to start the car and then everything died (Lights, dash doors) Almost like the battery has been disconnected. When opened the drivers door and closed it, the car came back to life. I could then start with no issues. This morning started fine, realized that I now need to put in the radio code after the electrics death. I pulled over, switched the car off and fixed the radio. Tried to start again and died again. Opened and closed the door trick, car came back to life but as I went to start again it died. I could not start the car. I rolled down the road and bump started it. The battery is pretty new and when starting it does not struggle. When the electrics die I loose the trip, MPG stats on the computer and I need to re do the radio code.

Hopefully I can start it when I go home from work this eve.

Any help would be great.

G

First check for corroded/poor contact or loose Battery connections and or grounds. Clean, sand paper if necessary and have the Battery Tested also. Due to the High AMP draw from the Starter enough power was withdrawn from the Battery for the radio to think it had been removed from the system. This is why the Radio Code was required. If the Battery is low check for Parasitic draw on the system.

Hi BKM,

Thanks for the feedback. When my car has no key in the ignition and I go to connect leads to my battery I am hearing a crackling sound of electricity. Is this a surefire symptom of a messed-up ground? I will check my ground leads tomorrow and report back.

You may want to track down that crackling sound if possible. Be sure to check/clean all the major connections Positive and Negative from the Battery onward especially those to the "Starter". Several Months ago another member had issues and after it was all said and done it was just the Battery.
