Air conditioner kicks on for a few seconds then turns off on

Hi all!

I had a little quirk today with my 1999 Volvo S80. I was out in the parking lot today chatting with a friend when all of a sudden my car's air conditioning kicked on while the car was not on at all. The system kicked on and ran for about 30-45 seconds before shutting off. However, because I was a little freaked out by this, I opened the door to see if the AC was running inside the car as well. I was wondering if it's supposed to do this when it's really hot out side ( I live in North Carolina and its over 100 degrees today) or if it is a problem with the AC. Any suggestions/advice is welcomed. Let me reiterate the fact that my car was not running *at all*. The key was tucked away in my pocket, outside of the car, so there is no way that the car started.
