Pick and Pull Etiquette

Post by Ben850 »

I am still a bit upset as I type this. Today I was looking forward to one of my simple pleasures of returning to the pick and pull for some parts I spotted a few days earlier.
The car had actually been there for a few months and I thought I might finally pull the tail light asseblies from this '97 850 for my '93. They were in fine condition last week, but when I went to pull them this afternoon, it seemed someone had intentionally smashed them both, and cracked the reflector piece on the deck lid as well.
Personally, I try not to damage any parts that I do not intend to take myself, unless it is necessary to remove what I need. in fact, most times if I need to remove a part to get to another, I will leave it in plain sight for someone else that may need it.
So I drove about 30 miles each way, during severe storm warnings to only come home empty handed.
What was done was rude and malicious, and left a bad taste in my mouth for humanity for a short bit. I'm over it, but I felt a need to vent and wondered if anyone else notices these disrespectful actions for apparently no reason.
Anyway, there will be more parts, happy hunting to all.

Bullying Pick-n-Pull version.
The guy that did it probably drowns kittens on days he's not fixing his car.

+1 Jimmy, Its unfortunate that the US is coming to what it is, I can't trust a soul anymore, It shows there is no hope for the human race, I totally agree, people need to get their asses whipped into decency.
Sorry things didn't work out for you.

Unfortunately that happens a lot. People smash their way through tons of good parts - especially on the interior - to get to whatever they want. Several cars had rocks thrown through the windshield when I wanted to get the glass.

Use to work in San Francisco in the late 80's near what use to be called Candle Stick Park home of the S.F Giants. Had to leave the ashtray open so no one would smash the windows for coins. One time an employee chased a guy going through a car till his partner came driving around to run him over. Almost did till he jump on top of the car that was being broken into. I think times changed in the early 90's and has been careening downward fast.

I do have to admit to one thing I damaged for fun, but I knew nobody wanted it. It was a ripped cloth, passengers front seat in an 850 wagon, not powered and I really wanted to see what would happen when you hit the side impact trigger. It was interesting, and I guess I learned something. But I still felt a little guilty for damaging something even though I knew it would never be salvaged for a functioning vehicle.

My story was a luckier one than you Ben.

Our local pick & pull had a great low mileage '96 GLT with 70K miles (114K kilometres) and a near new engine, trans, new brakes and discs, great leather and panels that were straight apart from a small ding near the tailight.

I scored complete engine with accessories, rebuilt radiator, transmission, leather driver's seat, 4 near new 16" Firestone tires and alloy wheels, 4 new discs with new pads and the CD radio for around $900 all up. The block of this motor as well as trans is running in the '99 V70 I'm finishing.

When I went back to score the near perfect leather steering wheel they advised me the car had been crushed the week before

I left a MAF, the perfect electric passenger seat, the steering wheel, the cruise brake switch and a ton of other stuff that absolutely no-one will benefit from except the metal recyclers. The yard is owned by Sims Metal which is a huge group here in Australia and no car escapes the crusher.

Yes, the sad thing about this pick and pull, is that it doesn't usually hold the cars for very long before sending them to the crusher. I was sure this would be the last chance to get anything from this car since it was there for more than a few months.
Like I said, the good thing about that is there will be more. But 850s are getting scarce now.

I'm not sure how sparce they are around you, but the closets scarp yard that has Volvos to Cedar Rapids, Iowa is about 95 miles away, (one way) Never been there, they said they had a stock of 1 850... And i need new front seats pretty bad..
